A quiet challenger to HDMI may be emerging from China, and it's called GPMI – the General Purpose Media Interface.

Developed by the Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance and backed by major Chinese tech players like Huawei and TCL, GPMI promises double the bandwidth of the upcoming HDMI 2.2 standard, supporting up to 192 Gbps of audio and video transfer, plus up to 480 watts of power.

It's designed as a true all-in-one interface, capable of handling data, power, network connections, and even two-way control systems. GPMI could significantly streamline the clutter behind our screens — but only if it gets adopted outside China.

So far, that's a big "if." While GPMI has received nods from the USB Association and has USB-C compatibility, most of its momentum remains domestic. Without support from global TV giants like LG, Samsung, or Sony, the new standard may face an uphill battle. HDMI and USB-C are still meeting the needs of most consumers and manufacturers, meaning GPMI's biggest strength — its advanced integration — might not be compelling enough to spark a rapid global shift. Still, if tech continues trending toward higher resolutions and smarter power management, GPMI might just be the cable of the future.
