Scientists have uncovered compelling evidence that aging may spread through the bloodstream via a molecular messenger known as HMGB1. This protein, normally involved in DNA repair and immune signaling, appears to accumulate with age, triggering inflammation and tissue degeneration throughout the body.
In a landmark study, researchers injected young mice with blood from older animals and observed rapid signs of cellular aging. However, when they blocked HMGB1 using a targeted antibody, the effects were reversed — tissues regained elasticity, stem cells reactivated, and metabolic performance improved.
The discovery suggests that aging is not simply a matter of time but a biological process that can be interrupted and possibly reversed. It opens the door to therapies that could slow or even halt age-related decline at the molecular level.
