Things that go bump in the early morning.....

It's 5am, adorned with a headlamp, I head out to the chicken coop. As I shimmy across some ice, to get better footing, my headlamp catches a movement.

I looked up, casting rhe light ahead of me, to see a skunk 4 feet away.

Quickly, I back peddle on the ice, fall backwards, landing with a bump on my left hip.

At that moment, I expect to get a blast of noxious acrid scent. It is quiet and dark as my headlamp beams into the naked tree branches above. The air remains crisp.

Scrambling to my feet, I aim my light back in the skunk's direction.

To my surprise, the black and white creature is looking perplexed. Head turned up, tail rounded with tip towards the ground.

What exactly is he thinking of me, with this glowing eyeball?

Probably not what he was expecting after awakening from his long winter's nap.

I manage a few words, to 'move along'. 'I mean no harm.'

One more stare down, and he turns and goes about his business, as I go about mine.

Hike 49/54 9.19.20
Mt Caribou, So Oxford, Maine

The fall-like temperature on Saturday was perfect for a hike with my niece Heather and hubby Eric.

After hiking the presidental range for six weeks, this was a nice moderate hike with excellent views of the Carter Moriah range and many other peaks.

Marking this one was one of my favorite!

A change of pace today. A boat ride out of East Harpswell courteous of my sister and brother-in-law.
