As Uganda approaches the 2026 presidential elections, the country is once again at an important democratic moment. Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has imposed restrictions on internet access, citing reasons such as national security, public order, and controlling misinformation.
On one hand, supporters of internet restrictions argue that they can help reduce the spread of false information, prevent online incitement, and maintain calm during a sensitive period.
On the other hand, critics note that internet shutdowns can limit access to information, affect businesses and services, and reduce transparency and communication during elections.
At Neutral Uganda, we recognize that both stability and digital freedoms are important. A balanced approach that protects peace while respecting citizens’ rights remains key to strengthening Uganda’s democratic process.
