Senegalese on a mission to plant five million trees

In the south of Senegal an ambitious man, Adama Diémé, a project manager for a Spanish NGO and agricultural trainer, is on a mission to plant five million trees over the next five years to combat deforestation in the region. Adama Diémé has raised $5000 of his own money to start the project, called Ununukolaal, meaning “Our Trees” in the local Jola language. The initiative aims to plant various types of trees, depending on the local community's needs, and simultaneously empower women by teaching them how to become small-scale farmers.

Over the last three years, about 142,000 seedlings have been planted, meaning much more work needs to be done in order to reach the goal of 5 million trees. To help organize funding, Mr. Diémé has partnered up with tailor Yolanda Pereñiguez, who designs t-shirts with earnings going towards purchasing tree seedlings. The planting of trees not only helps the environment but also benefits the people living in the region as it helps to protect their homes from rising water levels caused by climate change, which has threatened the homes of villagers in the Casamance River area.
