On March 18, 2021 the State Minister for Minerals Sarah Opendi launched the USD$20million aerial mineral magnetic survey on the resource rich Karamoja sub region. The deal was awarded to Xcalibur, a company from Spain. The money from the Corporate Internationalization Fund of Spain is meant to complete the country’s mineral profile survey. The scope of the project is to acquire process, interpret and deliver high-quality resolution Magnetic-Radiometric, Gravimetric, Electromagnetic Survey and its complementary Geological and Geochemical study data.

It is hoped that this development will grow investor confidence, shake off speculators and elevate the country on a commercial pedestal for harnessing the mineral resources in Karamoja sub-region.

There have been corruption allegations at the highest level surrounding the project right from the start. Therefore, as stakeholders we need to keenly follow the project activities to ensure that there is transparency and accountability for the loan funds and that the people of Karamoja realize tangible results from their minerals resources.
