SB64 Climate Negotiations: From Commitments to Action

As the UNFCCC SB64 negotiations begin in Bonn, one message is clear: the world is shifting its focus from promises to implementation. Countries are discussing how to accelerate climate action on adaptation, climate finance, food systems, forests, and a just energy transition.

For Africa and other vulnerable regions, climate finance remains a key issue. Developing countries continue to call for predictable, accessible, and adequate funding to support adaptation and resilience-building efforts.

At CAN-U, we will be following these discussions closely and advocating for climate justice, stronger adaptation action, and meaningful support for communities already facing the impacts of climate change.

Today, the Climate Action Network Uganda (CAN-U)held a CSO Climate Change Adaptation Thematic Sessionin preparation for COP30.

Prof. John Baptist Kaddu delivered an insightful presentation on “Items for Negotiation at COP30”, emphasizing the importance of separating Adaptation (Article 7) and Loss and Damage (Article 8) under the Paris Agreement to give each the prominence it deserves.

The discussion focused on Uganda’s priorities, the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) indicators, and the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience, highlighting 11 targets to be achieved by 2030 across key sectors like water, agriculture, health, and ecosystems.

CSOs reflected on how to align with government priorities, identify existing gaps, and develop recommendations ahead of COP30.

Civil Society Unites for Gender-Responsive Climate Action

Today, Climate Action Network Uganda (CAN-U), with support from the Uganda Community Based Association for Women and Children Welfare (UCOBAC), successfully convened the First Gender and Climate Thematic Working Group Meeting at our Secretariat in Ntinda.

The meeting brought together members and partners to begin shaping a Civil Society Position Paper on:
✅ Gender, Health, Adaptation & Resilience
✅ Loss & Damage
✅ Land & Food Systems
✅ Climate Finance & Gender-Related Tax Issues
✅ Capacity Building

This milestone engagement marks the start of a systematic process towards COP30 in Belém, Brazil, where Uganda’s civil society will contribute a united voice to global negotiations.

As countries prepare to submit their NDCs 3.0 for 2035, this working group ensures that gender equality and inclusivity remain central to climate action—building resilience, justice, and sustainable solutions for all.

Thank you to all members and partners who actively contributed to this critical first step. Together, we are making climate action more inclusive, ambitious, and impactful.
