NEW BULINDI BABIES! Part 1 - A baby girl for Lucia.
It's been a season of new arrivals for the Bulindi chimpanzees, with 3 of the community's 6 females giving birth in the last few months. A fourth female looks set to deliver in the next few weeks.
First was Lucia, who gave birth to a healthy female infant in April - the same month that she turned 9 years old. 9 years is exceptionally young for a female chimpanzee to give birth in the wild! Females in the wild usually deliver for the first time when they're about 13 to 15 years old.
Lucia is a natal Bulindi female, who never migrated to another community. It seems she became pregnant before she had a chance to leave Bulindi to look for other chimps!
Thank you to Born Free Foundation Jane Goodall Institut Schweiz Friends of Chimps Blair Drummond Safari Park Zoo Liberec, příspěvková organizace, for sponsoring our long-term monitoring and conservation of the unique chimpanzee communities living in Uganda's Budongo-Bugoma corridor, including the amazing Bulindi chimps!
