Nkumba University promotes education in business, law, arts, social sciences, sciences, communication and cultural fields with the aim of stimulating the spirit of enterprise and for the students to act critically in the competitive global environment. It is a non-profit, non-denominational institution granted a Charter in 2006 by the Government of Uganda. The University promotes education in busi
ness, law, arts, social sciences, sciences, technical, communication and cultural fields as well as engendering the spirit of enterprise. Nkumba University aspires to be a leading national, regional and global hub for academic and professional excellence. In both the academic and co-curricular activities, the University endeavors to provide an enabling environment for the students to achieve competence, creativity, confidence and character so as to think critically and act responsibly in an increasingly competitive national and global environment. The University Main Campus is at Nkumba, 27 kilometers along Kampala–Entebbe Highway. The University Kampala Campus is in Mengo on Plot 773 & 774, along Kabakanjjagala Road. Nkumba University has Distance Learning Liaison Offices in Gulu, Amuria and Kyegegwa Districts. The University has six Schools: School of Business Administration; School of Education, Humanities and Sciences; School of Law; School of Industrial, Commercial Art and Design; School of Sciences; and, the School of Social Sciences. Nkumba University aims to excel through quality assurance practices, which include internal quality assurance mechanisms as well as external assessment of University programmes and facilities by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA). The aim here is to ensure that the University programmes are nationally and regionally accredited and comparable internationally. The management of the University underscores dialogue in its relationship with the students’ Guild, and encourages good politics so that the entire students’ body can carry on with those values after university and make lasting contributions to society. With the support of management, the University sports team stands out among its peers in Uganda and the East Africa region. The University has three intakes:
• The January Intake;
• May Intake; and,
• August Intake. The Study Sessions include:
• Day Session;
• Weekend and Evening Session; and,
• Distance Learning Session. The School of Law is the only one of its kind in the region offering programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Criminal Justice as well as Diplomas in Criminal Justice. These programmes are particularly suitable for the following categories of people: The Police; Prisons; The Army; other security organs; and, Human Rights organizations. The School of Sciences focuses upon Applied Sciences in line with government efforts to popularize Science and Technology Innovation (STI) in tertiary institutions and public life. Nnabagereka Hostel, which is within the main campus, has boarding capacity for over 300 female students. The School of Education, Humanities and Sciences ensures that students engage in school attachments as well as school practice to acquaint them with the atmosphere in nursery, primary and secondary schools in terms of teaching and interaction with students and fellow staff. In addition to other programmes, the School of Social Sciences teaches Security and Strategic Studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Applicants for PhD require a Masters Degree from a recognized institution, a Bachelors Degree as well as O’ and A’ Level passes /credits as indicated below. Applicants for Masters Degree programmes should hold a first Degree with AT LEAST SECOND CLASS HONORS or its equivalent; Applicants for Degree programmes should hold At least 5 passes at UCE obtained at the same sitting and at least two (02) principal passes at UACE obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent; Applicants for Diploma programmes should hold at least 5 passes at UCE obtained at the same sitting and at least one (01) principal pass plus two (02) subsidiaries (in subjects done at principle level) at UACE obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.
