Boho na Bwete Ancestor Reliquary Figure – (c.1879–early 20th century)

These powerful ancestral sculpture was created by the Mahongwe group of the Kota peoples in the Ivindo River region of Gabon and the Republic of Congo. Made from wood and copper alloy, the abstract face represents a guardian of ancestral relics, placed on sacred containers holding the remains of respected ancestors. These figures symbolized protection, wisdom, and the spiritual connection between the living and their lineage.

Kota reliquary figures are among the most influential African sculptures, inspiring major modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee.

At , we are direct collectors who source pieces from their original communities and regions, ensuring authenticity and cultural respect. Our stock of these historic pieces is extremely limited, making them rare opportunities for collectors of African heritage art.
