Eyüp Sultan Mosque & Eyüp Sultan Tomb – A Beautiful Short History ✨

The Eyüp Sultan area is one of the most sacred and spiritual places in Istanbul. It is named after Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Eyüp Sultan), a close companion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He came with the early Muslim army during the first Arab siege of Constantinople in the 7th century and passed away near the city walls.

Centuries later, after the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II (Fatih Sultan Mehmed) discovered his burial place and ordered the construction of the Eyüp Sultan Mosque and Tomb. The mosque was completed in 1458 and became one of the first important mosques built by the Ottomans after conquering Istanbul.

For centuries, Ottoman sultans visited Eyüp Sultan before important ceremonies and even held sword-girding ceremonies there as a symbol of leadership and blessing.

Today, Eyüp Sultan remains a place of prayer, peace, and spirituality, where millions of visitors come to reflect, pray, and experience the beautiful atmosphere overlooking Istanbul. ✨
