This week in history, June 3, 1956, city authorities from Santa Cruz California announced a total ban on rock and roll at public gathering. This followed a police visit to an event at the city's Civic Auditorium where a lieutenant reported that the crowd of youngsters was engaging in "suggestive, stimulating and tantalizing motions induced by the provocative rhythms of the band." The ban happened as authorities felt rock and roll was detrimental to the health and morals of youth. Within two weeks, similar bans were created in Asbury Park, NJ and San Antonio TX.
