There was once a tale, or should I say, a rumour, that the local fishermen had known a dugong named Rai-Henek for over 30 years. Nori and Daniel, no matter how many boats were out fishing, “Rai-Henek” (aka Sandy) would always only come to visit them.

I found this hard to believe. Dugongs are on the endangered species list, and I know they’re not very friendly. They keep their distance because they used to be hunted, and their habitat has been lost due to pollution, boat strikes, fishing nets, and climate change.

But no, this is no rumour. Dugongs can remember and know who we are. Even though they always try to communicate with us, Rai-Henek definitely knows who is who underwater. He will always come to greet Chikako, Marcus, and Juvi, just like a puppy when its parents are home. You know you’ll have a best friend to come and greet you with love! 🦭

These moments are truly priceless, forever memories in their hearts

Today we were blessed to have seen a BABY DUGONG today, well my drone did 😅 but nonetheless this was such a special moment indeed, I’d say maybe a week old at that ❤️.

A baby dugong, born over a meter long, and can weigh up to 35kg at birth. Calves are able to swim immediately and stay with their mothers for two years or more, communicating with chirps and squeaks. They nurse on their mother’s milk and can also start eating seagrass, eventually developing a strong bond with their mothers ❤️🇹🇱
