On 6 May 2026, WFP joined H.E. President José Ramos‑Horta and partners in Dili to launch “Social Protection for Food Security and Nutrition: A Business Case.” The launch highlights why nutrition‑sensitive social protection is not a cost, but a smart investment for healthier children, stronger communities, and more resilient economies.

Timor‑Leste is leading by example through Bolsa da Mãe Kondisional – SANUTRIO, an innovative programme linking cash assistance with maternal and child health services to help prevent stunting. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion of the Government of Timor‑Leste and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Through the Global Task Force on Social Protection for Nutrition, funded by the Government of France, WFP provides technical expertise to promote country‑led solutions and South–South learning, strengthening food security, improving nutrition, and advancing progress towards Zero Hunger.

The Government of Timor‑Leste, through the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion (MSSI) and the National Institute of Statistics of Timor‑Leste (INETL), with technical support from WFP, held joint ceremonies in Ermera, Oecusse, and Covalima to mark the completion of enumerator trainings, the launch of the Social Registry Census, and the start of data collection. These events mark a key milestone in the establishment of Timor‑Leste’s first National Social Registry (Rejistu Sosial Uniku) and the transition to implementation at municipal level.

The census will generate socio‑economic and vulnerability data to strengthen evidence‑based policymaking and improve the targeting of social protection programmes, particularly the Government’s key Bolsa da Mãe Kondisional ba Saúde Nutrisaun Inan no Oan (SANUTRIO). Through close collaboration with INETL and MSSI, WFP is supporting high‑quality digital data collection and analysis to help build a more inclusive and shock‑responsive social protection system focused on maternal and child nutrition.
