Songkran Festival – Thailand’s
Traditional New Year

Songkran is Thailand’s traditional New Year celebration, observed from April 13th to 15th every year. The word Songkran comes from the Sanskrit word “Sankranti”, meaning transformation or change. Traditionally, it marks the end of the dry season and the beginning of a new solar year.

Originally, Songkran was a time for spiritual renewal. Thai people would visit temples, make merit, and gently pour water over the hands of elders and Buddha statues to symbolize purification and the washing away of bad luck. Over time, this evolved into the fun and lively water fights we see today, turning the festival into one of the most anticipated events in Thailand.

It’s not only a time for celebration but also for family gatherings, paying respect to elders, and reconnecting with Thai cultural roots.
