In a loss-making quarter
SCC reported a loss of Bt512m for 4Q24, vs. a loss of Bt1.1bn a year ago and a profit of Bt721m in 3Q24. 4Q24 earnings were largely as weak as expected, vs our loss estimates of Bt650m in 4Q24 and the consensus of a loss of Bt839m. Excluding non-recurring items, core earnings came in at a loss of Bt512m during 4Q24 or Bt6.3bn for full year 2024, -52% YoY. The total start-up cost for Long Son Chemicals amounted at Bt6bn (including financial expenses and depreciation costs), depressing over the chemical subsidiary to report a loss of Bt8bn during 2024.

Progress with ethane project
Event: On 23 Jan, SCC reported to the SET regarding progress with its ethane feedstock enhancement project for Long Son Petrochemicals Co (LSPE) in Vietnam, undertaken by its subsidiary, SCG Chemicals Pcl (SCGC). The details include the following: • Ethane gas feedstock. On 17 Jan, SCGC entered into a long-term ethane supply and terminal agreement with Enterprise Products Partners L.P, a leading US ethane supplier. Under the contract, Enterprise will supply 1m tons per year for 15 years of ethane from the US on a free-on-board basis for LSPE.
Investment cost. The capex for the project is estimated at US$500m/Bt17bn (below the previous budget of US$700m). The funding will be from internal cash flow. The completion of the construction is targeted by end-2027 (three years from now). Funding will be from internal cash flow. The majority of investment will be related to handling and ethane tank storage. LSP is designed for gas feedstock flexibility. Ethane gas provides a US$250/ton feedstock price advantage relative to the naphtha price. Meanwhile, the ethane price is less dynamic while the naphtha price is affected by oil prices.
