Two ways to become a faster runner is to increase stride speed or stride length, something knee drive is key to. However, even though elite sprinters will raise their knees to an angle of up to 90 degrees to the vertical, this should be avoided in regular runs.

Negative effects for knees up higher than 45 degrees in normal road runs:
⚡ Wasteful energy for the bouncing motion over a prolonged period of time
⚡ Increased impact on the joints and as a result an increased risk of injuries

Why you should still work on your knee drive
✅ improving your knee drive to around 45 degrees to vertical will improve you stride length and speed, both will make you a faster runner
✅ driving your knees to a maximum of 45 degrees angle from vertical, you will stride further without immediately overstriding, and can use gravity to allow your foot to hit the ground with greater force.
✅ imagine a string around your hips pulling you forward, rather than upward
✅ attempting to increase stride length or speed without focusing on knee drive can lead to technical flaws and increased injury risk

➡️ Test: take a video of yourself doing strides of 70% effort
Assess: is your knee drive lower than 45 or maybe even higher?
Step it up: incorporate a handful of strides in your runs to work with focus on this. Remember, never force a new movement on your body during the full run, instead slowly introduce the new movement to your running style or work on it in in a gym.
