Sel Space Mývatn
Designer: aurs.studio
Project type: competition

The idea of the project is to recreate the inviting space by adding the new path with the new programs to the travel route of the Mývatn lake for the visitors who want to visit the Skútustaðagígar craters and for the guests of the Sel hotel as well as the local who want to enjoy the beer brewery, beer spa, and beer bar with the beautiful surroundings of the Mývatn lake. In order to attract the locals and the tourists to Sel Space Mývatn, The building programs have been exposed by the glass facade. The mass of the building is divided into two parts by the center terrace that connecting the Sel hotel and the Mývatn lake and allowing the visitors to decide to enter into the cafe and souvenir at the front building that facing the Skútustaðagígar craters or enter into the beer terrace at the back building to enjoy the beer experience along with the Mývatn lake scenery. The form of roof of the front and back building is sloped down toward the center terrace. The solid and translucent roof and facade material can create the connection between the front and back building. The gradient roof and facade can blur the atmosphere and surroundings into the building space.

In order to adapt to the diverse weather conditions in Iceland, maintaining comfort for visitors during both warm summers and cold winters, the folding glass partition is opened during summer to connect the beer brewery, beer bar, and beer spa with the beer terrace in order to let the visitors sit outside to enjoy the atmosphere and allow the natural ventilation to pass through the building.the folding glass partition is closed during winter in order to keep the building warm with the insulated material such as the double glass facade as well as the double polycarbonate sheet with the air gap for the translucent roof and the wood foam sandwich panels for the solid roof and the the heating system under the floor structure.

The project envisions the transformation of the Mývatn lake area by introducing a new pathway and innovative programs, enhancing the overall experience for visitors heading to the Skútustaðagígar craters and catering to guests of the Sel hotel. Additionally, it aims to provide a unique destination for locals seeking relaxation and enjoyment, featuring a beer brewery, beer spa, and beer bar amidst the picturesque surroundings of Mývatn lake.
To entice both locals and tourists to Sel Space Mývatn, the architectural design strategically incorporates a glass facade, unveiling the building's programs. The building is intelligently divided into two sections by a central terrace that seamlessly connects the Sel hotel with the Mývatn lake. This design allows visitors to choose between entering the front building, housing a café and souvenir shop overlooking the Skútustaðagígar craters, or accessing the back building with a beer terrace offering a delightful beer experience complemented by the scenic views of Mývatn lake.
The roofing design of both the front and back buildings slopes down towards the central terrace, promoting a harmonious integration between the Sel hotel and the lake. The solid and translucent roofing and facade materials establish a visual connection between the two sections. The gradient nature of the roof and facade introduces an element of fluidity, seamlessly merging the building with its surroundings and creating an immersive atmosphere within the architectural space.
