On Friday, excitement filled the air at Bulimeni, a remote community on the outskirts of Manzini, as residents, government officials, development partners and community leaders gathered to celebrate the commencement of construction of a solar-powered mini-grid that promises to transform lives and livelihoods.

Developed under the GEF-funded Africa Minigrids Programme, the project will deliver reliable electricity to households and businesses, while unlocking economic opportunities in areas such as small enterprises, food production, and services. Importantly, it supports women and youth to turn energy access into income generation and resilience.

This initiative reflects the power of partnerships between Government, UNDP, GEF, and other partners to advance sustainable, inclusive development – ensuring no community is left behind.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy Eswatini

Through the Igniting Eswatini's Green Engine programme, the United Nations in Eswatini has handed over renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies to 16 MSMEs, 11 schools and 11 Neighbourhood Care Points across the country.

The initiative has already benefited more than 15,000 people by reducing energy costs, improving productivity, enhancing service delivery and increasing access to reliable, sustainable energy. From solar-powered businesses operating off-grid to schools cutting cooking times and care centres replacing firewood with biogas, the results demonstrate how clean energy can drive economic growth while strengthening community resilience.

The programme was funded through the Joint SDG Fund with an investment of USD250,000, complemented by co-financing contributions of USD50,000 each from the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), under the coordination of the United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office (UNRCO).
Implementation was led by UNDP and WFP in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy.

CREATE is a transformative initiative that supports MSMEs to drive inclusive economic development across Eswatini’s key electricity-dependent value chains – agriculture, manufacturing and services – by promoting investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions.
