Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, just days after US immigration officials denied him entry to the FIFA World Cup.Artan was set to make history as the first-ever Somali referee at a World Cup before being turned away by US border authorities. In a swift turnaround, UEFA announced he will now take charge of the high-profile Super Cup clash between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League holders Aston Villa in Salzburg on August 12.According to UEFA, the appointment follows discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as part of an ongoing cooperation agreement between the two governing bodies. Artan enters the historic fixture carrying high continental prestige, having been named Africa's Best Male Referee in 2025.
