South Sudan’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that heavy rains and flooding are likely to affect several parts of the country until September, citing rising water levels in the Nile.

Director for Emergency Preparedness and Response, Charles Placido Wani, said readings from the Ministry of Transport’s Meteorology Department indicate a flood alert downstream.

“Alert level has been reached at Mangala Station, while the alert level at Juba Station it is just three centimetres from being reached,” Wani told Radio Miraya. “Locations downstream will likely experience some floods. Most gauging stations saw rising river levels over the previous days, and this may continue in the days ahead.”

Wani urged residents living along the banks of the Nile to move to higher ground and called on state governments to reactivate their flood task force committees.

“We are asking the states and the counties to activate their structures, disaster management committees, and the bodies that are supposed to work on issues of flooding,” he said. “This is our alert, let us cooperate so that, over time, we can find solutions to these flooding issues.”
