John D. Rockefeller was the wealthiest American of all time and once one of the richest men in the world. By the age of 25, he controlled one of the largest oil refineries in the U.S. By 31, he had become the world’s largest oil refiner, and by 38, he commanded 90% of the oil refined in the U.S. At 50, he was the richest man in the country.

As a young man, every decision, attitude, and relationship was geared towards building his personal power and wealth. However, at 53, he fell seriously ill, experiencing severe pain and hair loss. Despite his immense wealth, he could only eat soup and crackers. An associate noted that he couldn't sleep, wouldn't smile, and found no joy in life. His doctors predicted he had only a year to live.

Facing the prospect of death, Rockefeller realized that he couldn't take his wealth with him. The man who once controlled the business world recognized he wasn't in control of his own life. He then made a pivotal decision: he called his attorneys, accountants, and managers, announcing his intention to channel his assets into hospitals, research, and charity work, establishing the Rockefeller Foundation.

This shift led to significant medical advancements, including the discovery of penicillin and cures for malaria, tuberculosis, and diphtheria. Remarkably, as he began to give back, Rockefeller's health improved dramatically. Although he was expected to die at 53, he lived until he was 98.

Rockefeller discovered the transformative power of gratitude and philanthropy. Giving away much of his wealth not only healed him but also brought him profound happiness. He later reflected in his diary, “God taught me that everything belongs to Him, and I am merely a channel to fulfill His wishes. My life has been a long, happy journey, full of work and play. I let go of worry, and God was good to me every day.”
