President Kiir: Campaign to start in July, elections in December 2026

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reaffirmed that South Sudan's general elections will be conducted in December 2026, stressing that there should be no further extension of the electoral timeline.

Addressing a public rally at Freedom Square in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, President Kiir said preparations for the elections are underway and that the official campaign period will commence in July 2026.

The President told the gathering that he would return to Aweil during the campaign period and urged all aspiring presidential candidates to publicly declare their intentions and prepare to compete in the elections.

"I will come back here for a campaign. The campaign will start this coming July and elections will be held in December 2026," President Kiir said.

He further called on anyone interested in contesting for the presidency to come forward and participate in the democratic process.

"If there are those who want to contest for the Presidency, they should declare themselves and get ready for the campaign so that we know them," he added.

The President's remarks come as the country moves toward implementing key provisions of the peace agreement and preparations for what is expected to be South Sudan's first general elections since independence.

The rally in Aweil was attended by national and state government officials, community leaders, youth groups, and residents who gathered to welcome the President during his visit to Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
