[NL] Afgelopen vrijdag 12 juni 2026 vond de officiële overhandiging plaats van de overeenkomst tussen het GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) en de stichting “Vrouwen Geven Borstvoeding aan Marowijne.” Katy Thompson, Resident Representative van UNDP, had de eer het contract te overhandigen aan mevrouw Mase, de vertegenwoordiger van de stichting.

Via deze financiële ondersteuning zal de stichting het project “Sustainable Agricultural Development in Cottica via Raised Bed Cultivation” uitvoeren. Dit initiatief heeft als doel de landbouwweerbaarheid in de regio Cottica (district Marowijne) te versterken, waar gemeenschappen vaak te maken hebben met seizoensgebonden overstromingen.

Mevrouw Mase, vertegenwoordiger van de stichting, benadrukte dat veel lokale huishoudens herhaaldelijk te maken hebben met mislukte oogsten als gevolg van landbouw op laaggelegen gronden. Om deze uitdaging duurzaam aan te pakken, introduceert het project klimaatslimme landbouw met verhoogde bedden, waardoor gewassen beter bestand zijn tegen overstromingsrisico’s.

Bij de overdracht waren ook aanwezig: de voorzitter van de GEF-SGP Suriname National Steering Committee, de heer Steven Vroom; Eric Wijngaarde, National Coordinator van GEF-SGP Suriname; en Berdi Berdiyev, Deputy Resident Representative van de UNDP.

[ENG] Last week on Friday June 12, 2026, the official handover of a signed agreement was done between the GEF - Small Grants Programme (SGP) and Stichting “Vrouwen Geven Borstvoeding aan Marowijne”. Katy Thompson, UNDP Resident Representative, had the honor of presenting the contract to Ms. Mase, the representative of the foundation.

Through this grant, the foundation will implement the project “Sustainable Agricultural Development in Cottica via Raised Bed Cultivation.” This initiative aims to strengthen agricultural resilience in the Cottica region (Marowijne district), where communities are often affected by seasonal flooding.

Ms. Mase, representative of the foundation, highlighted that many local households face recurring crop losses due to farming on low-lying terrain. To tackle this challenge sustainably, the project introduces climate-smart raised bed farming, allowing crops to thrive despite flooding risks.

Also present at the handover were the Chair of the GEF-SGP Suriname National Steering Committee, Mr. Steven Vroom; Eric Wijngaarde, National Coordinator of GEF-SGP Suriname; and Berdi Berdiyev, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative.

[NL] Veertien ondernemers uit de Paamaka-gemeenschap hebben met succes deelgenomen aan de training Social Media Marketing & Branding for Entrepreneurs, georganiseerd door het EMSAGS-project in samenwerking met Newmont Suriname.
De training vond plaats op 23, 24 en 30 mei 2026 in het Mining Training and Extension Center (MTEC) te Snesi Kondre en voorzag deelnemers van praktische vaardigheden op het gebied van social media marketing, branding, contentcreatie en het gebruik van Artificial Intelligence (AI) voor bedrijfsontwikkeling.
Deze activiteit is een direct resultaat van de genderanalyse en gemeenschapsconsultaties die EMSAGS in 2025 in het Paamaka-gebied heeft uitgevoerd. Tijdens deze consultaties gaven gemeenschapsleden aan behoefte te hebben aan ondernemerschapsontwikkeling, inkomensdiversificatie en praktische vaardigheidstrainingen.
De training laat tevens zien hoe het MTEC wordt ingezet waarvoor het is opgericht: als centrum voor kennisdeling, capaciteitsversterking en economische ontwikkeling. Met initiatieven als deze vertaalt EMSAGS-onderzoeksresultaten naar concrete kansen voor duurzame ontwikkeling en economische weerbaarheid in het binnenland.

[ENG] Fourteen entrepreneurs from the Paamaka community successfully completed the Social Media Marketing & Branding for Entrepreneurs training, organized by the EMSAGS Project in collaboration with Newmont Suriname.
Held on May 23, 24, and 30, 2026, at the Mining Training and Extension Center (MTEC) (MTEC) in Snesi Kondre, the training equipped participants with practical skills in social media marketing, branding, content creation, and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for business development.
This activity is a direct outcome of the gender assessment and community consultations conducted by EMSAGS in the Paamaka area in 2025. During these consultations, community members identified entrepreneurship development, income diversification, and skills training as priority needs.
The training also demonstrates the intended use of the MTEC as a hub for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and economic empowerment. Through initiatives like these, EMSAGS continues to translate community-driven research into tangible opportunities for sustainable development.

[ENG] This week, UNDP convened over 30 partners and stakeholders to review the key findings and recommendations from the Independent Evaluation covering 2022–2026 and lay the groundwork for the Country Programme Document (CPD) for 2027–2031. Participants highlighted how UNDP’s work over the past five years has contributed to strengthening institutions, advancing environmental resilience, supporting elections, and improving the livelihoods of indigenous and tribal communities across Suriname.
Attendees recognized UNDP’s significant role in Suriname and shared concrete proposals for the new Country Programme, which will coincide with upcoming oil and gas exploration and the rapid economic transformation unfolding in Suriname. Throughout the meeting, partners emphasized the value of robust partnerships, innovation, and digital transformation. They also reaffirmed their commitment to institutional strengthening, improved governance, and inclusive socio-economic transformation, especially for indigenous and tribal communities, youth, and women. The priorities proposed for UNDP’s CPD 2027–2031 will be closely aligned with Suriname’s national development agenda and the broader objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (MSDCF). The programme will concentrate on three core areas: Democratic Governance, Inclusive Transformation, and Resilience & Environment, ensuring a responsive and impactful approach to Suriname’s ongoing development journey.

[NL] Deze week bracht UNDP meer dan 30 partners en stakeholders samen om de belangrijkste bevindingen en aanbevelingen uit de Onafhankelijke Evaluatie over de periode 2022–2026 te bespreken, en de basis te leggen voor het Country Programme Document (CPD) voor 2027–2031. De deelnemers benadrukten hoe het werk van UNDP in de afgelopen vijf jaar heeft bijgedragen aan het versterken van instituties, het bevorderen van milieuresistentie, het ondersteunen van verkiezingen en het verbeteren van de levensomstandigheden van inheemse en tribale gemeenschappen in heel Suriname.
De aanwezigen erkenden de belangrijke rol van UNDP in Suriname en deelden concrete voorstellen voor het nieuwe landenprogramma, dat samenvalt met de aanstaande olie- en gasexploratie en de snelle economische transformatie die zich in Suriname voltrekt. Gedurende de bijeenkomst benadrukten partners het belang van sterke partnerschappen, innovatie en digitale transformatie. Ze bevestigden tevens hun inzet voor institutionele versterking, beter bestuur en inclusieve sociaaleconomische transformatie, vooral ten behoeve van inheemse en tribale gemeenschappen, jongeren en vrouwen. De voorgestelde prioriteiten voor het CPD 2027–2031 van UNDP zullen nauw aansluiten bij de nationale ontwikkelingsagenda van Suriname en de bredere doelstellingen van het VN-Samenwerkingskader voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling (MSDCF). Het programma zal zich richten op drie kerngebieden: democratisch bestuur, inclusieve transformatie en veerkracht & milieu, en zorgt zo voor een responsieve en impactvolle aanpak van de verdere ontwikkelingsreis van Suriname.
