SECDO Implements Community Health and Environmental Hygiene Awareness Campaign to Address Climate Change Impacts
As part of its ongoing efforts to monitor the effects of climate change and promote public and environmental health, the Somali Environmental Community Development Organisation (SECDO) has launched a targeted community awareness campaign using local media and visual communication tools.

The campaign focused on delivering key health and hygiene messages through mass communication channels. Public awareness messages were broadcast via local radio stations—Radio Asal and Radio Heals—based in Jowhar town. In addition, educational stickers featuring both illustrations and written guidance were distributed to the community, highlighting the prevention of communicable and waterborne diseases.

The campaign emphasized the importance of preventing illnesses such as acute watery diarrhea, cholera, and malaria, particularly during the river flood season, when contamination and poor sanitation conditions increase the risk of disease outbreaks. Special attention was given to the protection of children from exposure to stagnant, contaminated water, which poses a serious health threat in vulnerable communities.

The awareness activities reached communities not only in Jowhar and Mahaday districts, but also in surrounding villages regularly affected by floods, including Buurfuule, Xudur-Ciise, Shaan, and other nearby settlements where access to reliable health information is limited.

Through this initiative, SECDO aims to reduce the incidence of preventable diseases and strengthen community resilience to climate-induced health risks. The organization remains committed to improving local preparedness and awareness in the face of environmental and public health challenges.
