Join us for an evening of engaging conversations and a rooftop film screening at Ban Workshop for the Dakar premiere of The Enduring Legacy of Ladi Kwali (2024), directed by Dr Jareh Das.

Following the screening, Ban Workshop founders Imann Gaye, Amadou Samb and Dr Jareh Das will discuss traditional pottery in Senegal and Nigeria, exploring its innovations, challenges, and enduring significance. They will also examine how a new generation of ceramicists, particularly in spaces like Ban Workshop, engages with historical legacies to ensure that pottery remains vibrant, relevant, and impactful for future generations.

Jareh Das

Dr Jareh Das is an independent curator and scholar based in the UK and West Africa. During her two-year early career fellowship funded by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art between 2022-24, Jareh continued her ongoing research on seminal Nigerian potter and ceramicist Ladi Dosei Kwali (1925-1984), focusing on post-colonial perspectives in Nigerian pottery and British studio pottery. Jareh explores the connection between Nigerian pottery and traditions of British studio pottery from the 1950s to the 1970s, with a particular emphasis on uncovering the complex power dynamics between Africa and the West in ceramics. This research is an extension of Jareh’s ongoing scholarship and curatorial work on Ladi Kwali, which was part of Body Vessel Clay: Black Women, Ceramics and Contemporary Art shown at Two Temple Place, London and York Art Gallery in 2022.
