Build people to run systems. A beautiful plan is at the mercy of those that implement it.

Pass core values across generations through memorials. God said to Israel 'hang it by the door, so that when your children ask you - what is this?' then you pass the value. Pass the value, pass the virtue.

Memorials. Not sterile customs.

People have to be taught actively, not left at the mercy of impersonal systems, no matter how beautifully structured those systems are. Systems will always be 'interpreted' by people.

It was the custom of Israel to hold Passover feasts; a miracle of deliverance in their history like no other nation has ever known, or may ever know. But it became just a passing custom, meant nothing special... because no one was passing across values.
Jesus attended one and saw how it was just cloud without rain. A ceremony that held so much potential had become a shallow, passive, draining engagement... where there was supposed to be living water, Jesus was seeing great thirst!

A Pharaoh came that didn't know Joseph, and Israel went into slavery. No memorial. Joseph's Pharaoh did not pass important things down.

Memorials.

Set them up, teach the next generation.

'Hello?' came the voice from the other end.

I was half-expecting a call from the ED because I was on cover for the Paed Onc unit. It was always coming; some tired voice needing to review a 5yr old with suspected hematological malignancy; but this one was not followed by 'please my name is Dr I'm-about-to-make-you-earn-your-pay, a resident in the ER...'

It was rather followed by a sweet shaky pause, and the voice was that of a child.
A male child, I reckoned.

'Hello...?' I said, relaxing my oncology nerves.

'Who is this please?' I had to ask.

'Dr Michael, this is E.A. Happy Father's Day!'

Ohh. Now I was smiling.

Truly I see lots of patients, but you see, I have to know all their names. Otherwise how would I thoroughly enjoy one of them calling me on a Sunday morning to make me smile this much?

'Thank you so much,' I replied, and this was my real face🄰

Lol.

Cancers in children provide relationships we probably don't want, but didn't know we needed. We have to stay with the children through the difficult journey, supporting them and their families as much as we can. We have pure joy when we see masses 'disappear', chronic fatigue relieved, smiles return, life prolonged.

We also learn so much about the brevity of life, and the value of each moment spent in love. Moments can truly be eternal.

You see this moment?
