*INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES – DECEMBER 3, 2025*
*By: Titus Morison Alieu*
Today, the world marks another *International Day of Persons with Disabilities*, a day set aside to reflect, recognize, and recommit to the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons living with disabilities across the globe.
In *Africa*, particularly in countries like *Sierra Leone*, *Ghana*, *Nigeria*, and others, people with disabilities continue to face multiple *constraints*—social stigma, limited access to education and employment, inadequate infrastructure, and exclusion from decision-making processes. Despite these challenges, a quiet but powerful revolution is underway. More disabled persons are rising, pushing boundaries, and making impact.
In *education*, progress is happening, but slowly. In many African nations, children with disabilities are still left behind. Schools are often not inclusive, and support services are scarce. However, institutions like the *Educational Centre for the Blind and Visually Impaired* in Sierra Leone have become symbols of hope and transformation, producing capable individuals who are now contributing meaningfully to national development.
As a *blind human rights activist*, I, *Titus Morison Alieu*, have committed my life to advocacy, inclusion, and empowerment. Losing my sight did not stop my vision—it only sharpened it. My mission is clear: to break the silence, raise awareness, and demand equal opportunities for all, regardless of physical ability.
My inspiration comes from my father, *Mr. Thomas Aliyu*, who lost his sight at the age of *five*, yet has remained a pillar of strength, leadership, and wisdom in our community. His resilience has shaped mine.
Sierra Leone is blessed with many other *prominent blind figures* who have laid the foundation for disability empowerment. Their contributions continue to pave the way for the younger generation to walk with confidence and purpose.
As we commemorate this day, let us remember: *disability is not inability*. Let us support each other, create inclusive spaces, and build a future where no one is left behind.
*Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities.*

Chapter One Night Club: A Luxury Trap That Divides Sierra Leone Further
While some hail Chapter One Night Club as a “world-class entertainment hub,” its arrival in Sierra Leone sends a troubling message—one that deepens economic injustice, promotes unhealthy consumerism, and draws a clear line between the wealthy elite and the struggling masses.
🧨 An Insult in the Face of Poverty
In a country where many citizens cannot afford a daily meal, the idea of spending Le 60,000 (old Le 60 million) on a bottle of champagne is not just shocking—it is insulting. How can we celebrate the opening of a nightclub that serves drinks costing more than a nurse’s monthly salary, in a country where hospitals lack basic medicine and communities still fetch water from dirty streams?
Chapter One doesn’t represent progress. It represents economic misalignment—where the rich flaunt imported luxury while the majority fight to survive.
🏚️ Widening the Class Gap
This so-called “ultra-luxury” club doesn’t just serve expensive drinks—it serves exclusion. Chapter One is a playground built for the wealthy few, while the average Sierra Leonean is kept out by sky-high prices and an unspoken class barrier.
Let’s be real: this is not nightlife for all. This is a clear case of discrimination against the poor, dressed up as sophistication.
🩺 Wrong Priorities in a Fragile Economy
Sierra Leone’s economy is still fragile. Instead of investing in sustainable jobs, better schools, and healthcare, we are celebrating the rise of luxury hotspots where foreign champagne flows like water. What does this say about our national priorities?
How can we justify a bottle of Dom Pérignon at Le 48,000, while our schools struggle to pay teachers and our youths lack access to skills training?
🚨 The Danger of Economic Imitation
Clubs like Chapter One promote a dangerous lifestyle that many young people cannot afford. It fuels peer pressure, materialism, and even crime, as some youths may seek fast money just to “feel among” or impress others. What begins as nightlife quickly becomes a social and moral crisis.
⚠️ A Call for Balance
We are not saying that Sierra Leone should not have entertainment or luxury venues—but when a place like Chapter One becomes a symbol of excess in a country filled with suffering, we must speak out. Let us prioritize national development, equity, and true empowerment over luxury for the few.
If we do not ask the hard questions now, we may soon find ourselves celebrating poverty in daylight and dancing with inequality at night.
