Let me cast my net on this

The way some of our leaders behave, you would think deportation is now part of the national employment scheme.

This week, we welcome the first batch of deported immigrants with convoy, camera and hotel accommodation.

The same people who were once called “diaspora heroes” will suddenly become “our brothers and sisters returning home.”

Everybody will gather for press conference. Speeches will flow like rain in August.

Somebody will even say, “This is an opportunity for national development.”

Wait small.

After two weeks, the hotel management will begin knocking on doors for payment.

That is when reality will arrive without invitation.

Because we know this script already.

At first, there will be talk as if they care.

Big English. Sympathy. Handshakes. Smiling photographs.

Then slowly, everybody will disappear and leave these people to survive by themselves in a country where even those who never travelled are struggling to breathe economically.

But honestly, deportation alone is not the real problem.

The real question is what exactly are we bringing back home?

If these people have skills the country actually needs, then fine.

A man who knows construction, plumbing, nursing, ICT, farming, mechanics, electrical work or business management can still rebuild his life here and even help others survive.

No shame in that. Life can bend anybody.

But if the plan is simply to receive people, collect foreign support money in the name of “reintegration,” share the funds among the usual respected stomachs, then abandon the deportees to roam around frustrated, we are only importing another national headache.

Some people in power see human suffering as a business opportunity.

Every crisis is a budget. Flood is budget. Youth unemployment is budget. Drug abuse is budget. Deportation too has now entered the budget family.

Before long, workshops will begin in expensive halls with banner titles like:

“National Stakeholders Engagement on Sustainable Reintegration Pathways for Returning Migrants.”

Tea and biscuits will disappear first. Then project money will disappear second. The deportees themselves will disappear last.

And let us not lie to ourselves. Society can be wicked too. Today people will laugh at deported immigrants as if travelling abroad automatically means permanent success.

Meanwhile half of the people mocking them would sell their neighbour’s zinc roof just to touch Europe for two weeks.

Sometimes life simply defeats people abroad. Papers fail. Jobs disappear. Systems frustrate them. Not every deported person is a criminal. Some are just casualties of hard reality.

So if we truly want to benefit from their return, forget ceremony and focus on usefulness.

Give skilled people room to work. Support those willing to learn trades. Connect them to opportunities. Stop turning human beings into political content.

Because hunger does not care whether somebody was deported from America or returned from Mars. Once pocket dry, everybody speaks the same language.

Let me cast my net on this

This is what happens when somebody eats one plate of jollof rice after church program and suddenly begins to mistake himself for Prophet Samuel.

The other day, this pastor stood confidently on the pulpit and preached against Arsenal as if heaven had personally submitted league table updates to him.

He even said God told him Arsenal would not win the league.

Now Arsenal has won the league and the same man has appeared online with apology letter like student who copied wrong answer in exam hall.

These days, everything has become prophecy.

Your team loses, prophecy.

Your neighbor travels, prophecy.

Somebody refuses to greet you, prophecy.

Even football prediction has now entered altar service.

Some people no longer want to say “I think” or “in my opinion.” Everything must carry “God said.”

That is the dangerous part.

Because when people continue speaking carelessly in the name of God over ordinary things, they slowly reduce serious spiritual matters into comedy content for Facebook.

Football is football.

Support your club peacefully and leave heaven out of Premier League predictions.

Now see Arsenal fans.

You have given them fresh material for the next ten years.

From today onward, every apology video from a pastor will look like post-match analysis.
