At the first UN Tourism Africa and Americas Summit, which opens in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, our esteemed Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Madam Nabeela Tunis, in her statement, congratulated the Dominican Republic for bringing the two continents (Africa and the Americas) together to build a bridge between them.

Madam Tunis stated that the delegation from Sierra Leone appreciates the hospitality accorded to them and also thanked Minister Collador and his team for making this summit happen. She also commended the Secretary-General and his team for transforming the tourism landscape and making it more inclusive and diverse. Madam Tunis made reference to the rapid recovery that has occurred after COVID and noted that due to the ability of this sector to bounce back, it could be the strategy needed to accelerate progress on the SDGs in general.

Minister Tunis highlighted that the cultural connection between Africa and the Americas, particularly from the perspective of Sierra Leone, is deeply rooted in history and has shaped the identity and traditions of both continents. One of the most significant and tragic connections is the transatlantic slave trade, which brought millions of Africans to the Americas. Minister Tunis emphasized that Sierra Leone holds a significant place in the history of the transatlantic slave trade, as many who were taken to the Americas came from the region now known as Sierra Leone. It is worth visiting Bonthe Island and the Rotumba Slave Fort to reconnect with your heritage.

Minister Tunis continued by stating that the slave trade led to a profound cultural exchange, as African traditions, languages, and customs blended with those of indigenous peoples and European settlers, creating unique cultural expressions. The influence of African languages can be seen in the Creole languages spoken in the Caribbean and ports of the Americas. She added that in Sierra Leone, we have a unique form of Creole, which is a widely spoken vernacular across the country. African rhythms and musical styles have had a lasting impact on the music of the Americas, with genres like jazz, blues, samba, reggae, hip-hop, and several others all having roots in African musical traditions.

Regarding religion and spirituality, Madam Tunis mentioned that African spiritual practices, including those from Sierra Leone, have influenced religions in the Americas, leading to the creation of syncretic religions. In terms of cuisines, the culinary traditions of the Americas have also been enriched by African ingredients and cooking techniques. Several dishes are shared across the two continents. On language and literature, African languages have influenced many of the Creole languages in the Caribbean and parts of the Americas. It may interest you to know that there is even a place named Freetown in Trinidad and Tobago, and we also have a Sierra Leone Road in Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY PRESIDENT DR. JULIUS MAADA BIO ON THE PROCLAMATION OF THE 2025 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS IN SIERRA LEONE.

Fellow Sierra Leoneans

1. On 8th August 2024, Statutory Instrument No. 8 of 2024, regarding the conduct of a nationwide Population and Housing Census was successfully laid in Parliament. On 29th August 2024, this Statutory Instrument became effective following twenty-one (21) days from its laying.

2. Therefore, in line with the decennial Census calendar, I am pleased to announce that my government will conduct a nationwide Population and Housing Census (PHC) in 2025.

Fellow citizens,

3. You may recall that on the 27th November 2021, during my address to the nation regarding the launch of the 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census, I mentioned that one of the key reasons for conducting the 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census was to prepare for the decennial Census.

4. The data from this decennial Census in 2025 will guide the implementation of various development programmes, primarily the 2024 โ€“ 2030 Medium Term National Development Plan and our efforts to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals. This Census will provide reliable baseline data to assess the impact of critical development interventions on both these guiding instruments with a contemporary deadline of 2030.

5. Through statistical insights derived from this Census, we will track our progress and identify challenges crucial to our national development agenda.

6. Sierra Leone has a long history of conducting Censuses, dating back to the earliest Census in 1802 and followed by modern-day Censuses in 1963, 1974, 1985, 2004, and 2015. With the upcoming decennial Census scheduled for 2025, we will continue this legacy.

7. Building on the success of the 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census, we will leverage Computer-Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI) for the 2025 Population and Housing Census.

8. My government will commit considerable financial and logistical resources to support this 2025 Population and Housing Census. We will collaborate with our esteemed partners such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the United States Census Bureau through USAID, and others, to ensure the success of this important national endeavour.

Fellow citizens,

9. I have been advised by the Minister of Planning and Economic Development on the state of preparedness for the 2025 Population and Housing Census. In accordance with its functions, Statistics Sierra Leone shall have the general supervision and management in the conduct of the 2025 Population and Housing Census.

10. At this juncture, by the order made by the Statutory Instrument No. 8 of 2024, I now direct that a Population and Housing Census of all inhabitants of Sierra Leone be conducted from the 2nd to15th December 2025.

11. Therefore, I declare the night of 1st December 2025 as Census Night and the 2nd December 2025 as the date for the commencement of a nationwide 2025 Population and Housing Census for Sierra Leone.

12. I thank you, and may God Bless the Republic of Sierra Leone.

*CHIEF MINISTER DAVID MOININA SENGEH ENGAGES WITH THE PUBLIC THROUGH SURPRISING HOSPITAL VISITS AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT EXPERIENCE.*

In a refreshing display of leadership, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh took a step closer to the people with a surprise visit to Connaught Hospital on a Saturday morning. This unplanned visit not only demonstrated his commitment to improving public health services but also showcased his hands-on approach to governance.

What started as a simple family outing turned into a meaningful encounter with one of Freetownโ€™s key public health facilities. After enjoying the popular fish pie at Salvonne Bakery, the Chief Minister persuaded his family to accompany him to Connaught Hospital. This spontaneous decision highlighted his deep interest in the state of the nationโ€™s healthcare system, which has been under scrutiny for the need for significant improvements.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Chief Minister Sengeh was pleasantly surprised by the positive changes he observed. Five months prior, during a previous engagement with the Ministry of Health, promises were made to renovate two wards and improve the overall standards at Connaught Hospital. True to their word, the hospital leadership and staff delivered on these promises. The facility was noticeably cleaner, with renovated wards reflecting a commitment to providing a conducive environment for both patients and healthcare workers.

โ€œThe Ministry of Health and the leadership of Connaught are doing an incredible job,โ€ Chief Minister Sengeh remarked. โ€œWhat they promised me five months ago has been deliveredโ€”two renovated wards and a clean, professional facility.โ€

His visit underscores the importance of holding public institutions accountable, as well as acknowledging and celebrating their successes.

To further connect with the everyday experiences of Sierra Leoneans, Chief Minister Sengeh and his family opted to take the public bus back home. The ride was not only quick, affordable, and comfortable but also a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the public. His choice to use public transport highlighted his belief in the value of engaging with the same systems and services that ordinary citizens use daily.

As the Chief Minister continues to prioritize the needs of the people, his leadership example could serve as a model for other public officials to follow, reinforcing the idea that those in power should be both responsive and accountable to their people.

PRESIDENT JULIUS MAADA BIO EXPLAINED WHAT RADICAL INCLUSION MEANSโ€ผ๏ธ

In light of recent criticisms directed at Dr David Moinina Sengeh, it is essential to clarify the purpose and intentions behind the Radical Inclusion Movement. Many individuals have raised concerns, suggesting that the movement is a secret political subgroup designed to advance Dr. Sengehโ€™s personal ambitions for future leadership. However, these claims are not grounded in fact.

The Radical Inclusion Movement is not a political faction but a progressive initiative aimed at fostering equality, tolerance, and inclusivity in line with the broader developmental goals of the government. President Julius Maada Bio, in his recent global engagements, has clearly articulated the essence of radical inclusion. He explained that it is about ensuring that no one is left behind, regardless of their background, gender, or abilities. This vision underscores the importance of creating an equitable society where every citizen has access to opportunities and is empowered to contribute to the nation's development.

President Bio's public endorsement of this concept on an international stage directly contradicts any notion that the movement serves as a political tool for personal gain. Instead, it demonstrates a clear commitment to governance that values inclusivity as a cornerstone of national progress.

In a powerful global statement, President Bio's views not only highlight the government's commitment to equality but also prove critics of David Moinina Sengeh wrong. This movement is about the nationโ€™s future, not individual ambition.

Kindly watch the video below for proof of President Bio's explanation of what Radical Inclusion truly means.
