Earlier this week, ๐๐น๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐, responded to the ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฎ ๐ญ๐ฑ-๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ-๐ผ๐น๐ฑ ๐ด๐ถ๐ฟ๐น whose case was referred to us through one of the community schools we support on safeguarding.
This childโs vulnerability was not created by one moment alone. It was shaped by poverty, neglect, and unsafe conditions where survival too often depends on risking oneโs safety.
Our team supported the survivor to ๐ณ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ and ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ at the ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ฏ๐ผ ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ, and we will continue monitoring the case closely.
But cases like this also expose another difficult reality: families often cannot afford the cost of seeking justice, including transportation, medical follow-up, and documentation. Yet local organizations like ours cannot turn survivors and their families away. We carry these responsibilities with extremely limited resources.
Child protection requires stronger investment in safeguarding systems, survivor support services, and community-based organizations already doing this work every day.

Today, we recognize and celebrate the dignity of work, and the millions of workers whose contributions sustain our economies, communities, and homes.
At ๐๐น๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐, we take this moment to especially acknowledge the critical contributions of ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ปโ๐ ๐๐ป๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ, work that is foundational to society but continues to be undervalued
Evidence shows the scale of this imbalance. According to ๐จ๐ก ๐ช๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป, women spend an average of ๐ฐ.๐ฏ ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ on unpaid care and domestic work, nearly three times more than men, who spend ๐ญ. This unequal distribution limits womenโs opportunities to participate fully in paid employment and economic life.
In Sierra Leone, where women make up ๐ฑ๐ฎ.๐ญ% ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฝ๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป, labour force participation is relatively high for both ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป (๐ณ๐ญ. Yet these figures mask a deeper injustice:
โข An estimated ๐ต๐ฒ.๐ฒ% ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป are engaged in informal employment
๐ญ% ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป are engaged in unpaid domestic and care work
We must speak honestly: womenโs unpaid domestic and care work falls outside the scope of Sierra Leoneโs labour laws and policies, yet it is this work that makes conflict-free homes possible, keeps families functioning, and subsidizes the economy every day.
Because decent work must include:
โ Fair wages
โ Social protection
โ Recognition of unpaid care and domestic work
The journey toward labour rights and equity in #๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ continues. We call on policymakers and institutions to advance this work with

International Womenโs Day is more than a celebration; it is a critical platform for change. As civil society and government actors in Sierra Leone commemorate progress, we must ask: Are we achieving impact, or are we simply following a routine?
Despite decades of advocacy, the statistics tell a sobering story:
โช๏ธ ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ด๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ก๐ฒ๐ด๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐: 22 years after the ๐ง๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป recommended social protection for survivors of civil war sexual violence, these needs remain unaddressed.
Government spending on social protection (excluding healthcare) sits at approximately ๐ฌ.๐ด% ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐๐ฃ, well below the regional average.
โช๏ธ ๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐บ๐ฝ๐๐ป๐ถ๐๐: Between 2022 and 2023, ๐ฎ๐ญ,๐ฒ๐ณ๐ต ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ were reported, yet ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป ๐ด% reached prosecution.
Behind these numbers are real lives. At ๐๐น๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐, we are calling on leadership to move beyond rhetoric and prioritize:
Rigorous prosecution for survivors.
Immediate support for those at risk.
Economic pathways to help women exit abusive
environments.
Comprehensive long-term physical and mental health support.
Safe, institutionalized protection programs. We thank activists and CSOs working tirelessly for gender equality and we urge the government to listen, invest, and act.
Join us. Engage with leaders. The message remains urgent:
