Deputy Minister Aziz-Kamara Represents MTHE at Launch of EU-Funded TVET Project for Returned Migrants
21th April, 2026
The Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, has represented the Ministry at the official launch of a new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative designed to support returned migrants through practical skills development.
The project, implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with funding from the European Union, aims to strengthen reintegration efforts by equipping beneficiaries with market-relevant skills.
The programme is being delivered in partnership with Freetown Polytechnic, which will play a key role in building the capacity of participants and aligning training with current labour market demands.
Speaking at the launch ceremony held at Freetown Polytechnicβs Jui Campus, Deputy Minister Aziz-Kamara described the project as timely and aligned with government priorities on youth empowerment and skills development. He noted that the government is focused on expanding access to TVET and ensuring that young people are equipped with employable skills that respond to labour market needs.
He commended the International Organization for Migration for its continued commitment to safe and dignified migration and thanked the European Union for its financial support, describing the collaboration as a strong example of effective development partnership.
According to him, the governmentβs broader agenda, under President Julius Maada Bio, prioritizes job creation and skills development as part of efforts to create opportunities for young people and reduce vulnerability to unsafe migration. He added that ongoing reforms in the TVET sector are aimed at modernizing training, improving certification systems, strengthening industry linkages, and promoting technical education as a first-choice career pathway.
The project will provide training in several vocational areas, including aluminium fabrication, painting, solar installation, welding, electrical installation, computer software applications, and tiling.
Aziz-Kamara also highlighted the role of Freetown Polytechnic in the initiative, describing it as a key institution with the capacity and experience to deliver quality technical education and support national reintegration efforts.
He encouraged beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity, stressing that skills development remains one of the most reliable pathways to personal and national progress.
