UK researchers develop solar cell that could increase module efficiency by over 25%
08.02.2012: A team of researchers from the University of Cambridge has developed a hybrid solar cell that absorbs red light and harnesses more energy from blue light than traditional solar cells. The researchers claim that the solar cells could conceivably capture 44 percent of incoming solar energy and could thereby increase the maximum efficiency of solar modules by over 25 percent. The team’s cell technology relies on adding pentacene, an organic semiconductor, to the solar cells. The team claims that the pentacene enables the cells to generate two electrons for every photon from blue light.
