Star for Life

Today, on 16th of June, it is 50 years since the learners at Orlando West High School and Phefeni Junior Secondary School joined the protest that contributed to the end of apartheid – the Soweto Uprising.

The learners were empowered by the idea that they themselves have the rights and the potential to bring about their liberation. Tragically, the police did not agree. Hector Pieterson was among the first to fall as the racist regime opened fire.

For the last 15 years, Star for Life has supported Hector’s peers at 10 schools in Soweto to make the most of the opportunities that his sacrifice helped win for them. We salute the youth of Soweto of 1976, and we are committed to empowering the youth of 2026.

Ett par gånger per år samlar vi våra partners för att både tacka för, och berätta om den verksamhet som de möjliggör. Den här gången var vi hos Nexer i Stockholm och kvällens tema var Star for Lifes jämställdhetsarbete.

Under kvällen fick vi lyssna till körmedlemmarnas erfarenheter av destruktiva normer som drabbar både flickor och pojkar och vi fick lära oss förskräckande statistik över det könsbaserade våldet i Sydafrika. Sist men inte minst fördjupade vi oss i arbetet med våra Boys Clubs där vi bygger upp en ny manlighet och våra Girls Club där vi stärker tjejers självständighet.
