The Clashindarroch wind farm has been generating renewable electricity since 2015. Over the same period, it has delivered more than £2 million for local communities in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, through its Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.
More than 180 projects have received support – from youth groups and mental health initiatives to local schools and sports clubs. One example is No. 30 in Huntly, a former derelict building now reopened as a community-owned space with a 60-seat cinema, co-working areas, café, gallery and retail space.
This is part of our broader commitment to drive the transition to fossil free living while supporting projects and organisations in the communities where we operate.

Together with our partners at SSAB, we’re building the single largest component produced with close to zero carbon dioxide emissions in iron production. In 2028, we will install a 120 tonne dam gate in the Stornorrfors hydropower plant in northern Sweden – a proof of concept, using hydrogen reduced sponge iron based on our HYBRIT® technology. Using this technology to manufacture the gate is estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by 200 tonnes, compared to traditional steel production.
It’s a full circle moment: fossil-free electricity powering the production of fossil-free steel – used for fossil-free hydropower.
This is an important step towards a society where it’s possible to move, make and live fossil free.

Is it possible to make cement with near-zero CO2 emissions? Through a collaboration with Cemvision, we support development of a new type of cement that could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional cement.
To cut carbon emissions from the energy system, we must also cut the emissions from the materials it is built with.
At our research and development center in Sweden, we are exploring initiatives like this and more to reduce environmental impact while supplying an increasing amount of fossil free electricity to Northern Europe.

At Vattenfall, we’re working for a future where we can all choose fossil free ways to move, make and live. Fossil free electricity, power from wind, solar, hydro and nuclear, is at the heart of our commitment. Our goal is to be free of fossil fuels in our own primary electricity and heat production by 2040.
This means expanding our generation of fossil free electricity, supporting electric transport infrastructure and helping industrial partners shift from fossil fuels to fossil free solutions.
