Sicily is rapidly becoming the area of Italy which I have explored the most, which makes me feel extremely spoilt. There is a reason that so many mainland Italians have it as their choice of holiday destination.

It is always fantastic to be back, this time travelling through some of the Baroque towns of South Eastern Sicily. Alberto, from Cognoscenti Travel and I were joined by some great fun agents, and Alberto had put together a trip with brilliant local guides, experiences, introductions, vineyards, palazzo and hotels, all ending with a visit to Etna and lunch with a (small) eruption for entertainment.

It was also another week of incredible food – Sicily has the most ridiculous concentration and variety of beautiful ingredients. All the different cultures brought something, and everything grows in the sun-drenched, rich volcanic soil.

Italy is obviously one of the most gorgeous countries, but Sicily, in many ways, is Italy at its best. Its authenticity; natural unspoilt beauty; crystal waters; unparalleled historical monuments and influences; I have mentioned the food, but most apparent is the incredible warmth and generosity of the people. When speaking with Sicilians about Sicily you might hear them mention “Sicilian Excellence”, they are so proud of it all, and so eager for you to experience it.

Now I just need to plan my next visit.
