View From This Side is OUT NOW!
Happy release day to me haha, I'm already beyond belief at the response that this album has had from reviewers and friends, and so now it feels like a huge weight off and a celebration to have it available everywhere, no matter where you listen to your tunes.
For me this music represents a new chapter in my life. A rebirth so to speak, both musically and otherwise.
I started writing some of these songs back in the final recording stages of On The Common, but mostly just chord progressions with no words.
Around this time, two things were happening in my world.
The first is that I was pretty heavily depressed and my tools and coping mechanisms for dealing with that had started to expire.
The second is that in an effort to reconnect with my past and my family, I started looking through old 35mm slides that had been left to me by my late Granpop.
The phrase 'View From This Side' appears atop most of these slides, and at the time it felt like a prompt to dig a little deeper into my own mind and my own inner issues.
This became the theme of the album, and the start of an intense and needed therapeutic journey – culminating in this music.
I hope it brings as much sun and healing as it has bought me xx

My new song August Flowers is out today 🥳
This is the first release from a new album I've been working on for the best part of two years, and this first single was picked by you, the people (via Instagram).
It marks an evolution of my sound, with electric instruments and drums changing how the instrumentals sound, along with some much more vulnerable and introspective lyrics.
I feel I've always written lyrics that share the same sentiment, but this time my language is much more overt, and I hope it connects because of that.
To me, this song is about depression creeping in. When its something you've lived with for a long time, you understand that it isn't going anywhere, but how you recognise it, and how you cope with it are the parameters that can change.
Sometimes we can see the leaves turning. Other times it comes like a thief in the night.

This is one of those ethereal songs for me that hits a nerve, and it usually has me welling up by the end of it, only to be bought back to life by the unmistakable starting note of Sloop John B.
I've often wondered what Brian had in mind for this track, as the day after the instrumental session, the vocal session was cancelled, leaving us with the now iconic instrumental left open for interpretation.
So this is my take on what I hear over the track, with all six members panned, doubled and multi-tracked to match the feel of the record.

I woke up yesterday with a very sore throat (thanks to Chas Leman 's London show) and an extra four notes in my bass range.
Naturally, I wanted to try a show I usually can't sing that low.
Let me know what you think of that D # bass note!
Song is the beautiful Deep River Runs Blue by Ron Elliott.
