What about smart glasses?

Mass-market adoption of HMD’s is a big part of bright prognoses of the AR market. In this case smart glasses looks very promising. In this post we will review 3 of them that took the lead in 2018.

For the last three years the most discussable device of the smart glasses type was a Magic Leap invested by Temsek Holdings. What is so discussable about that device? You can read the review on ML1 written by Palmer Laki, one of the founder of Oculus Go:https://tinyurl.com/y2euudhf Long story short: he didn’t get satisfy by the first version of the product. Anyhow, ML1 is the fastest growing AR smart glasses project on the market. Most of the soft making for ML1 is games, but they also have a contracts with AT&T and US Military, partnership with Brainlab (on the surgery project) and Sennheiser. Despite the critics, ML1 is alive and going for the mass-market.

The next big and better-looking thing is Focals made by North. Company taking an investment from Amazon. It is the smart glasses for everyday wear, which looks exactly like glasses but with a minimalistic intuitive holographic interface, controlled by the 4-directional ring-joystick. With the last update North integrated Alexa into the Focals. For now, it is almost exclusive product for the US market. The thing is that Focals uses individually customized lenses, which you can get only in the official store. The price is kinda high – $700-$1000 but it is a big step for the AR customer market anyway.

Not the least – Bose Frame smart glasses. By the visual and weight characteristic this HMD is very close to the sunglasses. The unique part of this device is sound augmentation going through the the earpieces of glasses. For now it works similar to AirPods: you can listen to music, taking phone calls and sound notifications. The team is working on the first update to add AR functions. First of all they will integrate Bose Frame with smartphone's GPS, which will allow users to get GPS notifications through the headset. In the future, they might add audio guides.

Smart glasses is our future. Sure, there will be much more profitable projects for the other HMD’s and mobile AR, but in the social part of the adoption, smart glasses will beat every single one of them. Just for example. Before cooperation between London National Theater and Accenture, the theatre used smart screens with dialogue frames on the displays to broadcast the information for the people with a hearing loss. AR smart glasses made by Epson allowed them to get all the information without a decrease in visual perception caused by the uncomfortable location of the screens. And there is so much more in smart glasses that will improve our living. We have to give it priority place in our technological desires and expectations.
