has been the leader of the first in history ski expedition from the continent to the North Pole (1979). This outstanding achievement of Dmitry Shparo was recorded in the London Guinness Book of Records. In 1988 Soviet-Canadian ski expedition led by Dmitry Shparo has crossed the Arctic ocean from Russia via North Pole to Canada - for the first time in history. In 1998 Dmitry Shparo together with his son Matvey have become the first people to have crossed by ski the Bering Strait. Father and son received recognition from Boris Yeltzyn, President of Russia, and Bill Clinton, President of the USA. In December 2007 - March 2008 Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin became the first men in history to have skied to the North Pole in conditions of a true polar night: 1000 km in 84 days from the Arktichesky Cape (Severnaya Zemlaya/Northern Land Archipelago) to the North Pole. In spring 2000 Matvey Shparo headed a ski expedition across Greenland. The team included a disabled participant who uses a wheel chair in his everyday life. In May-June 2002 Matvey Shparo was the leader of the team of 11 sportsmen, which made an ascent of Mt. McKinley, 6194 m, Alaska. The team included two athletes with spinal cord injuries.
