The first string “instrument” was the hunting bow. This is why some of today’s strings are also made of gut. Other materials for strings are various metals – usually steel, but also chrome, aluminium, bronze or gold, plastics such as nylon or perlon, and carbon fiber. There are many factors that influence the lifespan of strings, such as the string's material, the player's technique, including the use of the bow, the acidity of the player's hand perspiration, but also climatic conditions. This leads to a deterioration in sound quality that typically occurs gradually over time. This is why some violinists change their strings very often, like monthly, if they play in concerts or tour, or every two or three months.

Primul „instrument” cu coarde a fost arcul de vânătoare. Acesta este motivul pentru care și unele dintre corzile din prezent sunt făcute din intestin/maț. Alte materiale pentru corzi sunt diferite metale – de obicei oțel, dar și crom, aluminiu, bronz sau aur, materiale plastice precum nylon sau perlon și fibra de carbon. Există mulți factori care influențează durata de viață a corzilor, cm e materialul din care sunt fabricate, tehnica instrumentistului, inclusiv folosirea arcușului, nivelul de aciditate a transpirației mâinii instrumentistului, dar și condițiile climatice. Acestea duc la deteriorarea calității sunetului, care apare de obicei treptat, în timp. Acesta este motivul pentru care unii instrumentiști își schimbă foarte des corzile, unii chiar lunar, dacă cântă în concerte sau turnee, ori la două sau trei luni.
