In 1927, Dutch astronomer Jan Oort studied the motions of stars near the Sun and uncovered something revolutionary. Our star was not stationary, it was orbiting the center of the Milky Way, dragged along by the galaxy’s immense gravitational pull. From his work emerged the realization that the Sun is moving at an extraordinary speed, completing a single orbit around the galaxy only once every 200–250 million years. In its entire lifetime, the Sun has made just a few dozen laps through the Milky Way.
And yet, here on Earth, we feel nothing. No acceleration. No rushing wind. Gravity locks us perfectly to the Sun’s motion, turning an immense galactic sprint into a smooth, silent journey. Motion becomes invisible when everything moves together, planet, oceans, atmosphere, and life itself.
