In procurement, a first acceptable sample can create confidence. However, confidence should not come only from being correct once.

It should come from understanding how that result will be repeated in serial production.

The experience of a supplier becomes visible not from a machine list, from a cost breakdown, or a nice first trial. It becomes visible through their way of creating a 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 that 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.

◼️How the process window is defined.

◼️How critical dimensions are monitored.

◼️How cycle time is stabilized.

◼️How deviations are detected.

◼️How quality gates are positioned.

◼️How the mould behaviour is observed after repeated cycles.

◼️How operators, engineers and quality teams react when the process starts to move outside the expected limits.

This is the difference between 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 and 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬.

Procurement managers should be aware that for 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, the added value relies on the way that 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰-𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞.

It means looking at the 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. It also means identifying early the risks that could affect 𝐏𝐏𝐀𝐏 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥, 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲: Do not evaluate only what the supplier can produce once. Evaluate how they prove that the result can be repeated under controlled industrial conditions.

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧.

That is right. In plastic injection projects, material choice influences much more than the price per kilogram.

It affects: 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐝𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲, 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤.

This is why the cheapest material is not always the lowest-cost material in mass production.

A material can look good in the quotation phase and create problems later in production. 𝐇𝐨𝐰?

𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬, 𝐦𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫, 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲.

And they usually disappear in the worst possible moment: after the project has already moved forward.

For procurement managers, the real question should not be only:

⭕ “𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭?”

The better question is:

🟢 “𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭?”

Because material choice can influence: 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲, 𝐜𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 in the end 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧. A material change after validation is never neutral.

It can trigger new trials, updated process parameters, new measurements, customer approvals, revised documentation, additional testing, and sometimes tooling corrections.

◼️That means cost.
◼️That means time.
◼️That means risk.

This is why material consultation should happen early, ideally during RFQ and DFM review. And this is where can play a crucial role in your project.
