شهد القرن التاسع عشر تحول فساتين العشاء إلى فئة شبه رسمية فريدة. تميزت بفتحات صدر أعلى وأكمام، لتناسب وجبات المساء. في العصر الريجنسي (1800-1820)، ساد خصر الإمباير والموسلين الخفيف. وبحلول الأربعينيات، ظهر المظهر “الرومانسي” بتنانير جرسية وأكتاف متدلية. جلب منتصف القرن الكرينولين، ثم “البستل” في السبعينيات والثمانينيات، مما ركز على الخلفية بثنيات معقدة. وبحلول التسعينيات، ظهر منحنى S وأكمام “رجل الغنم” الضخمة. جعل التقدم الصناعي هذه الأنماط الفاخرة أكثر توفراً للطبقة الوسطى مع الحفاظ على قواعد آداب الطعام الصارمة.

The 19th century transformed women’s dinner dresses into a unique semi-formal category. Unlike ball gowns, they featured higher necklines and sleeves, suited for evening meals. In the Regency era (1800-1820), Empire waists and light muslin were popular. By the 1840s, the “Romantic” look introduced bell-shaped skirts and dropped shoulders. The 1850s-1860s brought the crinoline, followed by the bustle in the 1870s-1880s, which emphasized the back with complex draping. By the 1890s, the S-curve silhouette and voluminous leg-of-mutton sleeves emerged. Industrial progress made these luxury styles more accessible to the middle class while maintaining strict dining etiquette.
