I often get a lot of questions about how to start teaching, where to find students, what to do in this or that situation. However, once people have started their journey, their biggest concern changes. They become more bothered about whether they are “competent” enough to continue, because most of people who are struggling aren’t native speakers.

Apparently, when it comes to learning a language, people often think that native speakers are more suitable to teach. I agree with that, but just to a certain extent. Would you rather choose an experienced non-native teacher or an inexperienced native one to teach you? I would always choose the former. I have met amazing teachers, from all over the world. All dedicated educators hold the same view about this.

It is unfortunate that in many countries, teaching English has become an easy-to-get job for many foreigners but not for locals. Even among foreigners, native speakers are more preferable than others. Regardless of experience and degree that a person holds, as long as they are a native speaker, they are hired. This is, indeed, one of the biggest obstacles that a non-native EFL teacher gets.

BUT, teachers, do not let this put you down. I believe that as long as we are willing to work and willing to dedicate to this job, we will get there. I am currently living in Qatar. My main job here is teaching IELTS. I wouldn’t say I am famous but if a young girl is looking for an IELTS trainer, she will be told to contact me. People are sharing my videos and posts every day. I am not a native speaker. But I am good at what I am doing.

If you believe you are good at teaching, you are good at teaching. You become what you believe. And I believe in you too.

Teaching English doesn’t always mean ONLY English. It can be ANYTHING.

This is one example of my youngest student who is trying to catch up with his class (grade 4) because his family have recently relocated overseas.

Daniel, who is 8 years old, can speak very simple English since he had received English classes in Vietnam before moving to Qatar. He had never attended any extra-curriculum English lessons so his parents reached out to me to help him catch up with the upcoming school year.

What an amazing boy he is.

If you are teaching English as a second language or to speakers of other languages and you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
