Inspired by Samuel Beckett's 1961 play "Happy Days," Maro Michalakakos' installation captures the resilience and contradictions of human existence. In the play, the central character maintains optimism despite being buried up to her waist, and later her neck, in an earthen mound.
Here, two 12-foot mounds of pinkish-purple polyester fiber evoke a sense of both comfort and isolation. These mounds, close yet never touching, raise questions about connection, growth, and decay.
This work is on view in "By Way Of: Material and Motion in the Guggenheim Collection".
