The first flights into space were not part of the exploration of the universe, but an element of the arms race. In the Cold War, all means were good. Whether humanity as a whole thought about the ethics of space exploration, whether such conversations were held at the level of officials, or whether they were raised only in the scientific community — it remains to be guessed. It is known that on December 19, 1966, the UN General Assembly adopted the "Treaty on the Principles of the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies", or, as it is more commonly called, the "Outer Space Treaty".

The extremely low mass of most nanosatellites allows them to function only in low Earth orbit (LEO), as a result of which the financial costs of putting them into orbit are significantly reduced. The low weight of the devices also significantly increases the permissible number of satellites that can be put into orbit in one launch.
