In 1992, Honda released the CB1000 SUPER FOUR, also known as the "BIG-1," a large, water-cooled motorcycle, marking the beginning of a trend toward higher prices.Yamaha responded in 1994 with the XJR1200, a larger, air-cooled naked motorcycle, and Honda then released the CB1300 SUPER FOUR (SC40), powered by the larger 1,300cc X4 engine.
However, three years later, in February 1998, Yamaha also announced the XJR1300, with an even larger 1,300cc engine. The rivalry between the two companies became so intense that it led to an uncomfortable atmosphere of leaked secrets.Initially, Honda envisioned transforming the CBR1000F engine, previously concealed by a full-bodied hood, into a sophisticated design that deliberately emphasized the flat, streamlined shape of the water-cooled water jacket. However, the development team felt that since the engine would be visible, cooling fins would be more visually appealing. Therefore, when the model was upgraded to 1,300 cc, the cooling fins on the X4 engine were left as is.The drivetrain is based on the X4, a bold American bike (Honda categorizes it as a low naked custom bike) that debuted in 1997, and has been tuned for a truly enjoyable throttle response.
The 1,284 cc engine produces 100 HP at 7,500 rpm and 12.2 kg-m of torque at 5,000 rpm, meaning it produces more power at higher revs than the X4, but is also tuned for an intuitive and powerful feel in the low and mid-range.
