Diz a lenda que um corajoso e forte leão se apaixonou por uma pequena macaca que trepava as árvores do seu território. Todos os dias o leão se sentava à espera para a ver, e todos os dias ela o vinha visitar. Desesperados por este amor, e conscientes de que era contra a natureza, o casal foi procurar Buda em busca de ajuda. Comovido ao ver amor verdadeiro, o Buda levou-os ao Deus Hai Ho, que se virou para o leão e disse:
-Se concordares sacrificar o teu tamanho e força pelo amor que sentes por essa pequena macaca, dou-te o meu consentimento e abençoo a vossa união.
Sem hesitar, o leão concordou. De imediato diminuío de tamanho e viveu o resto dos seus dias feliz com a sua amada. Do fruto desta união nasceu o primeiro o Pequinês, herdando a coragem, a nobreza e o orgulho do leão e o tamanho, a inteligência e a doçura da macaca.

Legend has it that a brave and strong lion fell in love with a little monkey that climbed the trees in his territory. Every day the lion sat waiting to see her, and every day she came to visit him. Desperate for this love, and aware that it was against nature, the couple went to Buddha for help. Moved to see true love, the Buddha took them to the God Hai Ho, who turned to the lion and said:
-If you agree to sacrifice your size and strength for the love you feel for that little monkey, I give you my consent and bless your union.
Without hesitation the lion agreed. He immediately decreased in size and lived the rest of his days happily with his beloved. From the fruit of this union the first Pekingese was born, inheriting the courage, nobility and pride of the lion and the size, intelligence and sweetness of the monkey.
