An Introduction to Kayaking
The history of kayaking dates back at least 4,000 years. The Museum Five Continents in Munich, Germany features the world’s oldest surviving kayaks, from the year 1577.

Kayaks were invented by the native Inuit, Aleut, and Yup’ik people of Arctic North America.
Often referred to as “Eskimos,” these indigenous people live in modern day Greenland, Canada, and Alaska.

The word kayak means “hunter’s boat” or “man’s boat.
People now primarily kayak for fun and sightseeing, however they were originally designed for hunting.
These small boats were perfect for quietly hunting seals, caribou, and whales and other animals that lived in the water or along the shore.

The first kayaks were made from stitching seal and other animal skins together, with whalebones as the structure.
, often from seals, and stretching this material over a frame made from wood or whalebone skeletons.
Whale fat was used to waterproof the kayaks.

Kayak races were added to the Olympics in 1936.
