A mason jar filled with a Gatorade sample and a persistent scientist helped make the drink’s mass production possible.

Gatorade inventor Robert Cade had already been rejected by the University of Florida, but his students and fellow scientists remained optimistic and determined for him to succeed. At a Christmas party in 1966, scientist Kent Bradley unsuccessfully pitched the drink to Alfred J. Stokely, CEO of the Stokely-Van Camp food company, but brazenly showed up at the company’s lab the next day.

“He told the secretary, ‘I have an appointment. He’s expecting me.’ He went in and sold the idea,” said Phoebe Cade, daughter of Robert Cade. “It never would have happened without him.”
